Tom & Pat Bain's Scouting Story and Approach to Giving Back

Tom and Pat Bain have both dedicated a significant part of their lives to the world of Scouting, a commitment that has deeply impacted them both personally and as a couple. Tom's journey began in third grade when he joined Cub Scouts, proudly wearing his uniform to school on Pack meeting days. His involvement with Scouting continued through his youth, and by 22, he found himself back from college and unexpectedly stepping into the role of scoutmaster in his home troop in Manhattan. Tom's fondest memories include his experience in the Order of the Arrow, where he embarked on a journey of self-reflection that profoundly shaped his adulthood. Scouting provided Tom with a foundational sense of character, citizenship, and fitness, later helping him in both his professional career and volunteer roles.

Pat, originally from San Antonio, Texas, entered the world of Scouting when her oldest son became a Cub Scout. She served as a den leader for 18 boys, an experience that became a source of pride when 16 of them became Eagle Scouts. Her involvement grew into a 20-year career with her local council, where she worked to support the Scouting Movement. Pat's memories in Scouting include seeing one son reach the rank of Eagle Scout, with his Life Scout son likely to follow soon, which would mark three generations of dedication to Scouting in her family.

Their shared journey in Scouting became a central bond between them. Tom and Pat have been active supporters, both financially and as volunteers, contributing to local and national councils and special programs like Jamborees and the Order of the Arrow. They believe deeply in Scouting's mission to develop leadership skills, character, citizenship and fitness, which they see as essential to the future. The Bains' commitment to Scouting also extends globally, supporting international Scouting initiatives and helping communities in need through projects like a coffee plantation in South America that provided local jobs and economic growth.

Pat and Tom embrace Scouting's evolution, including the inclusion of girls in their programs, and they feel optimistic about its future impact. Their financial support, which they organize through a donor-advised fund, enables them to make ongoing contributions, ensuring that Scouting can continue to inspire and empower young people worldwide.
