Richard Davies Shares His Scouting Story & Approach to Bequest Giving

Dick Davies, a lifelong Scouter, currently resides in Madison, Wisconsin, where he serves as Vice President of Development for the Glacier's Edge Council. His journey in Scouting began in Baraboo, Wisconsin, inspired by family ties and friendships. His father, a World War II veteran, met a fellow serviceman whose son was a Cub Scout in Dick's community. Motivated by admiration for his friend, Dick joined Scouting and steadily progressed through the ranks to become an Eagle Scout.

As a young Explorer in the 1970s, Dick discovered his passion for leadership and mentorship through his involvement in the National Explorer President's Congress, a pivotal experience that profoundly shaped his life. In 1976, Dick was elected National Explorer President, a milestone that also led him to meet his wife, who served as his campaign manager. Their shared connection to Scouting, including an Eagle Scout son, became a cornerstone of their lives together.

Over the decades, Dick has been an integral part of Scouting's fabric. He has attended 15 National and World Jamborees, trekked the trails at Philmont three times, and contributed to various leadership initiatives within the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). His unwavering belief in Scouting's mission stems from the mentorship he received and the lifelong skills he developed within the program. Dick credits Scouting, along with his education at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard Business School, as one of the most significant influences on his personal and professional growth.

Dick's commitment to Scouting extends beyond his local council. As Exploring Chair for the National Commissioner Service Team, he champions the Exploring program, recognizing its potential to shape young lives. He is particularly passionate about creating opportunities for youth from diverse backgrounds and believes in Scouting's ability to uplift those who may not have had the same advantages he did.

In his role as Vice President of Development, Dick has emphasized the importance of financial stability for local councils. He is a strong advocate for building endowments and diversifying revenue streams to secure Scouting's future. Through initiatives like the Good Turn Society, he has worked to inspire others to leave a legacy of support for Scouting. Dick himself has included Scouting in his estate plans, reflecting his deep belief in the program's value and his desire to ensure its longevity for future generations.

For Dick, Scouting represents more than an organization-it is a lifelong community and a force for good. He is excited about Scouting's future, particularly as it has evolved to welcome youth of all backgrounds. Dick is committed to helping Scouting grow and thrive, so it can continue to instill values of leadership, service, and character in the lives of young people, just as it did for him.
